Ron Amadeo on Ars Technica reports a major incident involving Google Cloud and UniSuper, a $135 billion Australian pension fund. In an "unprecedented" event, Google Cloud accidentally deleted UniSuper's entire account, including all backups stored on the service. The outage lasted from May 2 to May 15, affecting 647,000 members.
UniSuper's CEO Peter Chun and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian issued a joint statement, calling it an "isolated, 'one-of-a-kind occurrence'" resulting from an "inadvertent misconfiguration." Despite having data duplicated across two geographies, both were affected by the deletion. UniSuper managed to recover its data thanks to backups with a different provider.
