Python Instructor Banned for Life from Meta Ads Due to AI Mishap

Meta 😠

10mos ago

Reuven Lerner, a full-time Python and Pandas instructor, shared on Hacker News his experience of being permanently banned from advertising on Meta platforms. Lerner discovered that his advertising account had been suspended for violating Meta's advertising rules, despite only ever advertising courses in Python programming and Pandas data analysis library.

Upon appealing the decision, Lerner was shocked to receive a response within 30 minutes, confirming his permanent ban from advertising on Meta platforms. Through his network, Lerner learned that Meta's AI system had mistakenly flagged his content as dealing with live animals, which is forbidden on the platform. The Python programming language and Pandas library were misinterpreted as references to actual snakes and bears.

Lerner's attempts to rectify the situation through contacts at Meta proved futile due to the company's 180-day data retention policy. With the original evidence of his ads now deleted, there appears to be no way to reinstate his advertising account. This incident highlights significant issues with AI-driven content moderation and the lack of human oversight in appeal processes on major tech platforms.
